Frequently asked questions
Q1. Wouldn’t it be better to put double glazed sealed units in my sash windows to make my house warmer?
A. Not always. This depends very much if you are in conservation area or your building is listed. Also, some traditional sash windows can be too thin to take the thickness of a sealed unit, and sometimes they can’t accommodate the additional weight. What’s more, you would be removing the original glass from your windows and changing the appearance of your windows and property. Because of all this, draught proofing can be a really good alternative – stopping air movement around the box and sashes, and achieving up to 80% of the energy performance of double glazing.
Q2. My windows are very rotten and damaged, can they be repaired and draught proofed?
A. Simply, yes. Before doing anything, we carry out any necessary repairs so your windows are as good as new and, most importantly, structurally sound. We can then draught proof the window so that your home stays warmer and your energy bills stay lower.
Q3 How long does it take to draught proof a window?
A. On average, it takes one of our craftsmen around a day to draught proof two to three traditional sash windows.
Q4. Will it make a lot of mess?
A. Not at all. All our craftsmen work tidily and carefully, and always clean up after themselves, they’re good like that.
Q5. Will draught proofing cause any damage to my internal decoration?
A. We always work as conscientiously as we can, and will never cause any avoidable damage. Of course, taking off internal sash beads can damage paintwork, but this is usually minimal and in most cases can be retouched. We do strongly recommend that you have your windows repaired before carrying out any internal decoration work.
Q6. My sash windows have been painted shut, can you help?
A. Yes we can, we can unstick both your top and bottom sashes and then re-weight them to ensure they move up and down as smoothly as possible.
Q7. What are your prices like?
A. A simple repair could start from as little as £50 and then go upwards to suit your budget. We’re a small business and that is how we like it. We don’t have to pay surveyors, craftsmen and the franchise owners their cut as part of our quotation, so our prices are fair, and often lower than industry standard. That said, we will only use the best quality materials for the job as part of our commitment to sustainability for the environment, and for your home. Whatever you need doing in your home, we’re more than happy to be flexible and work around your needs.
Q8. Do I need a survey?
A. Every home is unique, and your windows and doors are no different. Every sash, or casement window, or door, is a bespoke size so we need to measure these, check the quality and see if any repairs may need to be done. By doing a survey, this ensures we can give you an accurate quotation and chat to you about what options you’d like at the time.
